Following Christ with the Heart of St. Charles Borromeo
Lesson in Perseverance, Prayer, and Forgiveness
Today is the Feast Day of St. Charles Borromeo
If we wish to make any progress in the service of God we must begin every day of our life with new eagerness. — St. Charles Borromeo
St. Charles Borromeo’s Unwavering Commitment to Reform
St. Charles Borromeo’s life speaks volumes about courage, resilience, and an unwavering focus on the greater purpose he found in his faith. His story shows that true reform doesn’t come without hardship—and sometimes, the sharpest resistance is right at home. Though he was born into a position of power and privilege, Charles seemed to carry his role not as a crown but as a weighty call to serve and renew, even when it meant challenging the very structures around him.
From a young age, Charles saw both the nobility and the flaws woven into the Church. As the nephew of Pope Pius IV, he could have easily coasted on status and power, yet he felt compelled to push for change. Charles believed that God had handed him not just a position, but a mission. He didn’t just want to clean up appearances; he wanted to transform hearts, beginning with the clergy. This burning desire for reform led him into some serious clashes with others who found his standards far too demanding. His push for change felt intrusive to many, even among priests, who saw his reforms as a personal judgment on their way of life.
Facing Opposition: The Courage to Stand Firm
The backlash was severe. In fact, some of his critics didn’t just oppose him with words—they plotted to end his life. In one of the most harrowing moments of his life, Charles was shot by an assassin while praying. Miraculously, he survived, and instead of seeking revenge, he forgave his would-be killer. Forgiveness was more than a virtue for Charles; it was a natural extension of his faith. Just as Christ forgave from the cross, Charles knew forgiveness was essential for any real renewal.
A Life Centered on Prayer and Silence
What kept Charles grounded wasn’t just sheer grit, but a deep devotion to prayer. He anchored his strength in hours spent in quiet, turning to God not only in crisis but as part of his daily rhythm. When people slandered him or accused him falsely, he didn’t defend himself. Instead, he chose silence, trusting that his mission was God’s work, not his own. This silence wasn’t weakness; it was a bold act of faith.
The Power of Forgiveness in the Face of Betrayal
Today, Charles’ life offers some real takeaways for those of us facing trials, misunderstandings, or even outright rejection for our beliefs. He teaches that true strength comes from a life steeped in prayer and forgiveness, not from fighting for our own image. He reminds us that forgiveness—even when it feels like an impossible stretch—is a witness to the love of Christ. And perhaps most importantly, he calls us to renew our commitment every day, knowing that service to God is a daily act of choosing courage, choosing mercy, and choosing to trust.
Lessons from St. Charles: Living Out Our Faith Today
May Jesus give us the grace to follow the example of St. Charles Borromeo.
1. Perseverance Through Challenges and Criticism
Charles faced enemies both inside and outside the Church who saw his mission as a threat. He didn’t let criticism stop him from pursuing what he believed God had called him to do. When we encounter setbacks or criticism, do we let them shake our faith, or do we lean on God’s strength to keep going? Charles’ resilience teaches us that challenges don’t mean we’re on the wrong path; sometimes, they’re just proof that the path we’re on is worth the struggle.
Next time you hit a wall or feel misunderstood, remember that God uses our struggles to refine us. Ask Him to give you the courage to stay the course, trusting that He is with you in every challenge.
2. Making Prayer a Daily Foundation
Charles placed prayer at the center of his life. No matter how packed his day was, he always made time to connect with God. If we look at our own days, is prayer a mainstay, or just something we try to fit in? Charles knew that without this foundation, he couldn’t hope to inspire others or sustain his mission. It’s a reminder that our strength comes not from our own efforts but from a deep, ongoing connection with Christ.
Try setting aside a dedicated time each day, even if it’s just a few quiet minutes, to talk to God. Let this be a time to recharge and realign, a time when you let Him pour His strength into you.
3. Embracing Radical Forgiveness and Mercy
Despite being wronged by people close to him, Charles chose to forgive. When he was nearly killed by a member of his own clergy, he didn’t retaliate. He extended mercy. Think about those in your life who might have hurt you, knowingly or unknowingly. Are you holding onto bitterness? Charles shows us that real freedom comes from letting go of grudges and choosing forgiveness, even when it’s hard.
Ask God for the grace to release any resentment you might be holding. Forgiveness isn’t about excusing wrongs but about freeing yourself from the hold of bitterness, letting Christ’s love bring healing.
St. Charles, pray for us.
St. Charles Borromeo’s life is an example of how real courage is rooted in prayer, that strength lies in forgiveness, and that fidelity to God’s call isn’t a one-time choice but a decision we make again and again and again.
