Blessed Miguel Pro, Pray for Us

The Life of Miguel Pro: A Witness to Courage and Faith

"Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven." (Matthew 5:10)

Miguel Pro, a young Jesuit priest from Mexico, lived these words to the fullest during a time of brutal religious persecution in his homeland. Born in 1891, Miguel grew up in a deeply Catholic family, known for his humor, wit, and unshakable faith. But as the Mexican government began to crack down on the Church, banning public worship, Miguel’s life took a daring turn.

Ordained in 1925, Miguel returned to Mexico and became a priest in secret. He risked everything to bring the sacraments to the faithful. Disguising himself as a mechanic, businessman, or beggar, he celebrated Mass, heard confessions, and brought hope to those in hiding.

In 1927, Miguel was falsely accused of a plot to assassinate a government official. Arrested and sentenced to death without trial, he faced his executioners with extraordinary courage. Stretching out his arms in the form of a cross, he declared, "Viva Cristo Rey!" ("Long live Christ the King!") as the bullets struck.

Miguel’s sacrifice became a rallying cry for the faith in Mexico. Beatified by Pope John Paul II in 1988, Blessed Miguel Pro remains a powerful symbol of fearless devotion to Christ.

His life challenges us: How far are we willing to go for our faith? Are we ready to proclaim "Viva Cristo Rey" in our daily lives?
