Pope John XXIII said this at the canonization Mass of St Martin de Porres: “He did not blame others for their shortcomings. Certain that he deserved more severe punishment for his sins than others did, he would overlook their worst offenses.”
Perhaps today we can embrace the simple humility of St Martin who noticed the log in his own eye and was not consumed with the speck in the eye of others. (Matt 7). May God grant us the grace and mercy to see ourselves as we really are—sinners.
